Community Gardens & Allotments

Community Gardens and AllotmentsCommunity Gardens & Allotments

CAMCAS will soon embark on the development of Community Gardens and Allotments on the lands adjoining the Centre in Ballyconnell.  This will be a smoke free zone, and will facilitate a range of community enterprise initiatives which are targeted at social and economic sustainability, both for participants and for CAMCAS as a community owned company.  The gardens will be designed to provide communal areas where people can meet to chat and socialise.  It will also promote the benefits of outdoor physical activity.  The rooms in the Centre will have a 'home away from home' feel, providing comfortable and stimulating spaces for complementary therapies, health and wellbeing programmes, training and cookery demonstrations.  The existing Polytunnel will provide the training ground for organic growing and harvesting.

Full planning permission has been granted for this development which is due to commence in November 2015.  This Community Gardens and Allotments will be developed in two phases, and the first phase will include:-

  • Organic growing and harvesting in purpose built polytunnells
  • 35 terraced allotments (a number of which will be raised beds)
  • 2 green houses
  • community garden
  • sensory garden
  • surfaced walking track with designated seating areas
  • fruit trees
  • rainwater harvesting
  • enhancing existing mens shed facilities
  • Arts & Crafts room
  • Complementary Therapy rooms
  • Meeting & Training rooms

Allotments will be available for spring planting in 2017.
